Smartphones using encryption and biometrics will enable telecom companies to compete with banks and credit card companies for retail payment transactions. Expect wireless payments using smartphones to grow rapidly. Despite this, some customers will continue to prefer cash because it allows anonymous purchases and is convenient for smaller purchases. Mobile payments could generate commissions of up to EU2 billion a year in countries like France, Germany, Italy and the UK. What would happen if -- say -- Vodafone formed a partnership with Google, Nokia and American Express? Vital trends for the future of retailing from Futurist keynote speaker Patrick Dixon. Marketing and selling to customers should be fast, easy, convenient and satisfying. Keep your customers happy, listen to them, keep close to how they are really thinking about your products and services. In a time-poor world, customers are increasingly fed up with companies that waste time, make them wait, keep them on hold, make them stand in line. How many corporations are blind to unmet customer needs, lacking true insight into how customers actually feel about how they are being treated. Most executives hate robot automated answering systems when they are customers themselves, yet are happy to alienate their own customers by forcing them to use exactly the same technologies. What links will they make between the rise of China as a mega-industrial nation, buying huge amounts of dollars, keeping their own currency low, and costs of borrowing low for developed nations. Of course we are talking about a wider issue than China, but China is a dominant force in this regard. The fact is that China's willingness to buy dollars and euros in the 2000s provided a very welcome boost for developed nations -- providing a lot of money at low interest rates. Both governments and individuals took advantage of this to spend on things they thought were important at the time -- running up huge debts, and driving these economies into a long boom, creating local jobs, improving infrastructure, health care and education. One of the greatest challenges facing every multinational bank is TRUST - or rather restoring trust. And one of the greatest risks is collective BLINDNESS. Failure to see banking needs through the eyes of customers; dangerous assumptions that past trends can predict future; failure to look beyond the typical banking view of global trends. BENCHMARKING is a lazy way to lead (and possibly destroy) a bank: "We follow industry best practice", "We take an average industry-wide position on this issue". As we have seen, it is possible to sleep-walk with the rest of an industry into great danger, comforted by the large number of other banking leaders who have adopted similar strategies. Banks need clear vision, moral strength, prudent and agile leadership, flexible strategy, and customer focus." Patrick Dixon, Chairman Global Change Ltd and author of Futurewise.

Topics covered on my http://www.globalchange.com website include: future of retail banking, corporate banking trends, investment banking and fund management, online banking, mobile banking, risk management in banking, wholesale banking. The future of local, national and global banks. Non-banking competitors including retail stores, insurers, technology companies and mobile phone companies. Future of banking regulation and compliance issues - why compliance is not enough to retain trust and protect brands, and so on.

My banking clients over the last 15 years include ABN AMRO, ABSA bank, AIG, Allianz, AMA, Asset Management Advisors, Aviva, Bank of Ireland, Barclays Bank, Birla financial services group, BNP Paribas, Britania Building Society, Clariden Bank, Credit Suisse Group, Credit Suise First Boston, CUES, Deutsche Bank, Fortis, Friends First Bank, HSBC, International Mutual Funds Institute, Kazakstan Investment Forum. As soon as the first 5-10 duplicate spam messages are found the agency can respond by an immediate bombardment of the illegal site in a denial of service attack, shutting it down temporarily while other measures are taken to destroy the site.

But it has to be fast: a phishing scam can make many thousands of dollars in the first 10 minutes after an e-mail campaign begins.

Inflation rate - why do Central Bankers focus on such a low rate?

I was speaking to an audience of central bankers from over 25 countries last week for BNP Paribas in Nice...

For the last few years many countries have been chasing an inflation rate of around 2-3% which is almost zero compared to some of the highest rates we have seen in the past. There is a new generation growing up that have no memory of significant inflation who could be forgiven for wondering what the obsession with low inflation is all about.

In any event it is hard to find an absolute logic for such a 2-3% level. The real issue of course is stability, and the risk of a rate that hovers around 2% or less is that there will be some kind of deflationary shock with all the damaging consequences we have seen in Japan.

Most central bankers focus on inflationary shocks – for example a further hike in oil prices. But you do not need much imagination to see that things could go the other way.

An obvious example would be an outbreak of a bird flu derived virus that appears to be spreading fast with an uncertain mortality rate. While such an epidemic could turn out to be far less serious than the most optimistic forecasts for a bird flu mutation, most bankers I have talked to recently would consider that the impact could affect investor confidence as well as public behaviour.

My own straw polls of executive audiences around the world suggest that few human deaths would be needed from the first 50,000 cases of a rapidly spreading mutated bird flu to cause up to 25% or more of the entire workforce to stay at home “just to be on the safe side”, especially those worried about taking their children to school.

While no one can be sure what the economic impact would be of a more serious pandemic, it would be wise to consider the possibility that many prices could fall by more than 2-4%, and that a country that is “stabilised” around an inflation rate of only 2% could therefore be at risk of deflation in such a situation.

<span style='font-size:10.0pt; But many are also drawn by the life of the city itself.

Expect London to grow in size by another half million over the next decade, despite moves of many out to surrounding countryside and smaller towns.

Banking fraud still a problem - amongst own team of staff

Someone told me the other day that they knew of a number of cases where a staff member in the IT department committed a major fraud, was detected, and then spirited out of the bank with a glowing reference to help them get another job with a competitor.
I was recently with a group of ultra high net worth clients of a major bank, and spoke to them about their future after having had dinner with them the night before.

A question raised as a result of similar conversations with a number of them:

What is the wealth for? Private banking exists to preserve wealth and is successful. Many clients become wealthier each year – and cannot possibly in their lifetime find enough ways to burn through that wealth faster than it is created. Much of what they spend is actually saved – for example buying another property or a work of art, both of which appreciate in value.

<span style='font-size:10.0pt; so these assets are not being developed for them. The same applies to the grandchildren.

<span style='font-size:10.0pt;
